Be Free from Anger

Hey y’all, back with another!

The Book of Galatians, looking specifically into Chapter 5, tells us a lot about the characteristics of a believer of Christ, and other opposing characteristics. When looking into this chapter of Galatians more in-depth, we see that in Galatians 5:22-23 (NLT), the Holy Spirit, God’s Spirit given to all of us as believers, instills in us certain characteristics when we actually decide to be sensitive to this Spirit within us:

22 But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!

It is in an earlier part of Galatians, in Galatians 5:19-21 (NLT), where the rather distasteful traits of sin are mentioned:

19 When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, 21 envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God.

Our born-again association with Christ separates us from these characteristics by nature, but we, as humans, unfortunately still fall into some of these habits of the flesh. Out of this list from the scripture, one trait that we may fall into is the feeling of anger. Anger is defined as the following from Google:

  • (noun) “a strong feeling of annoyance, displeasure, or hostility”

  • (verb) “fill (someone) with anger; provoke anger in”

Anger causes destruction. Anger holds onto evil and wickedness, and is even a result of these two topics. From what we know of God, as loving and kind as He is, He would not want this feeling within His children, as James 1:20-21 (NLT) has stated:

20 Human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires. 21 So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls.

Anger is not beneficial to us, and instead, it holds us back as it may cause us to hold onto and ponder on what we should be letting go. We should try everything in our power to break from this habit, and fortunately, we have the Holy Spirit within us to guide us away from this bad habit that induces evil, which is recognized in ‭‭Galatians‬ ‭5:16-18‬ (‭NLT)

16 So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. 17 The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions. 18 But when you are directed by the Spirit, you are not under obligation to the law of Moses.

Anger is not a habit of a believer, for we work on ourselves every day to deny the flesh and its sinful ways, as ‭‭Galatians‬ ‭5:24-25 (NLT) has recognized:

24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there. 25 Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.

Since we have the Spirit, we should follow Him. We should be sensitive to Him since He lives in us, and as we do that, all the other traits of the Spirit will follow; those good traits as mentioned before in Galatians 5:22-23!

Be sensitive to the Spirit and what He guides you to do. He did not just appear through your ability to speak tongues, if you can, but He has been with you since you have acquired Christ! Be blessed and be thankful, and thanks for reading!
