Envy & Jealousy

It is very easy to get jealous of someone. Many times, jealousy arises because someone has the very thing you have wanted for a long time. For instance, your friend has the shoes that you’ve wanted and begged your parents for. It can be infuriating to see someone have what you’ve wanted for a long time. At one point or another, we’ve all been jealous, simply because of our human nature. Humanity has implemented a hierarchical pedestal into daily living. If we see someone who maybe has more money or status, we do in fact admire them, but there is a slither of jealousy lingering around whenever we come across them. We as people overlook the importance of not practicing envy. It is just another immoral thing that has been normalized in our world. In turn, the Bible has a lot to say about envy, and the dangers that arise from practicing it.

Proverbs 14:30 ESV - “A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh, but envy makes the bones rot.”

Something as simple as coveting someone else can lead to such vile punishment, similar to all sin. Continuous practice of jealousy can invigorate dangerous behaviors that get you what you want, but at the end of the day, is wrong. For example, a friend has the newest iPhone, and you’re jealous because you have a 4 year old iPhone. Because of that jealousy, you will be more inclined to steal, and that inclination can lead to even greater immoral action to get what you want.

James 4:2-3 ESV - “You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.”

As of now, jealousy may be a simple desire for something someone else has, but in the long run, that desire can turn into a ravenous hunger. Ultimately, jealousy for something that is perishable on this earth has no comparison to what waits for us in Heaven.
