Eyes and Ears: The Gateway into the Spirit

Hiii my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ!! Long time no see. Today's blog is about protecting yourself ーno scratch that ー protecting the Holy Spirit within you. We all know by now that what we watch and hear and even do, can either strengthen our inner spiritman or weaken Him.

If you don’t mind, follow me along this path. You are a Christian, who is in the middle of two extremes: extremely on fire for God and just…not. You happen to watch a music video of a secular singer and it’s full of impure dancing, slurs, and not to mention the song is not about pure love *eyes*. The music video finishes and you go about your day. As you are sitting down reading a book,*BOOM*, your mind wanders and you begin to think about the music video and can imagine in your head how the backup dancers were dancing. You begin to remember what they were saying and thinking about. However, you catch yourself and bring your mind back to your book, without praying about what just happened to you. Fast forward to two days later, you watch a movie on Netflix and it's a horror movie that is gory and bloody. You watch it and are filled with fear and find it hard to sleep at night. Even though this fear may last for a night, for that night you went back to being a slave to fear. Even though you only thought about that music video you watched for a brief moment, you still went back to the mind you had before you were saved. In both scenarios, your flesh is benefitting while your spirit is being weakened.

Here’s another thing, the things you don't do or fill yourself with, also affect you as a Christian. Here is what I mean: as Children of God we are to constantly surround ourselves with things of God; things that edify our spirits. Not reading the Bible affects your confidence in yourself and puts you at a disadvantage against the Devil and temptations. Seeking God’s advice after all of your friends have given their two cents turns the once loving and deep relationship with God into a “last-resort”. And WHOA, that is a very big no-no.

So, now that you know what not to do and the consequences of such actions, how about some verses and tips to help you guard your eyes and ears!

  • Proverbs 20:12 CEV “Hearing and seeing are gifts from the Lord.” It might seem like a simple verse, but it is telling us all not to abuse or misuse the things God has gifted us. Do not use what God has given to you for things contrary to His Word. Do not allow yourself to hear or believe anything that God has not spoken about you. When someone beats you down and makes you feel so low, remember that Psalms 118:14 (CEV) says “[Your] power and strength come from the Lord…”

  • Proverbs 4: 20-22 (NIV) “My son, pay attention to what I say; turn your ear to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to one’s whole body.” Open your ears to hear and retain God’s commands and block your ears from anything not from God. Protect yourself for you are hosting the Holy Spirit, a sacred being.
