Faith Without Works is Dead

Have you ever had an end goal: something you really wanted to become or achieve? Well, what if you were to purely believe in such a goal, but did nothing to make it come true? What if you spent your whole life believing in something that in your mind, was so optimistically possible, but you did nothing to reach it? It would be useless to believe, right? With this ideology, the Holy spirit makes it known to us that the Christian faith, without practicing what has been imputed into your spirit, is useless. Imagine the Bible, a free gift to us that is there to guide us through life, and one does not use this free walkthrough! It seems unethical for a free resource (or resources) to be given to someone, just for them not to engage in what it has to offer. In James 2:26, James tells us, “For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.” Comparing a soulless body to faith and works may seem morbid, but it’s very necessary in displaying how futile workless faith is. They work hand in hand! If one does good deeds but does not believe, they would be in the same boat as one who believes and does not put the word into practice (crazy!).

Now that you know why workless faith is useless, here are some verses and ways that can help you on your spiritual journey to a full-fledged faith. The bible tells us in 6:20, “My son, keep your father’s command Proverbs and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.” This command seems very practical, but it’s very important! Obeying your parents can be a very hard thing to do, especially when your mindset does not align with theirs. However, parents are a gift to help us go through life in the most labor-freeway. What I mean by this is that all parents have gone through life, and know what and what not to do. This makes them very reliable sources to guide you in the best way possible (God being the ultimate help obviously). Another verse that helps us is Luke 6:27-28, and it says, “But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.” Now this one is a really tough one, because having to choose kindness in every situation sometimes seems like the wrong thing to do (especially if someone has been very rude to you). But the bible lets us know that showing kindness to everyone no matter the circumstance, will have a greater impact on your life than being rude (fighting fire with fire). Therefore, the term “faith without works is dead,” is an amazing way of providing a wake-up call for us as Christians to not only be hearers of the word, but doers, who reap the full benefits of what true faith has to offer. It can be tough, but know that the end result is definitely worth it.
