Lying - Why We Need to be Honest

One thing’s for sure: whether Christian or not, lying is one thing that should never be tolerated. That’s why whenever you lie, there is a heavy guilt that weighs you down. That is also why whenever you confess, you feel that weight being lifted off your shoulders. The Bible says that God looks at liars with disgust.

Proverbs 12:22 NIV - The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy.

Not only would God look at liars with disgust, but literally anyone you lie to. When you lie, you are essentially ruining not only your reputation, but you are also jeopardizing how much people can trust you. It will eventually lead up to no one being able to trust you with important information or no one giving you important tasks. Not only are you destroying your relationships with people on Earth, but every time you lie, you are distancing yourself from God.

Psalm 101:7 ESV - No one who practices deceit shall dwell in my house; no one who utters lies shall continue before my eyes.

Honesty is also the main idea of the 9th commandment:

Exodus 20:16 ESV - You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

1 John 2:4 ESV - Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him,

The authors of the Bible make sure they put a strong emphasis on the importance of honesty. God clearly has a very apparent hatred for lying, so why do we lie so much? Lying usually occurs when you get in trouble and in order to save yourself from punishment, you lie to get away. The thing is, the punishment you might receive on Earth is absolutely nothing compared to what is waiting for you when Jesus comes back.

Revelation 21:8 ESV - But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.

Lying is utterly wrong in terms of basic morals, whether Christian or not, and in terms of Christianity. Honesty is the best policy!
