Only One You

Updated: Apr 17, 2023

Happy… Flow Way Monday everyone!!! I know, some of you were probably a little scared when you saw that first word. And although we don’t celebrate Halloween over here in the temple, we thought we’d take this opportunity to use the “holiday” as a blog topic. That being said, let’s get started!

Ever since we agreed we’d write a “halloween-based” blog, one thought circulated in my mind: there are so many of the same costumes. Don’t get me wrong, some of the costumes we see are so creative and intriguing that you can’t help but admire, but it is so hard to find a costume and say you’ve never seen it done before. Like, let’s be honest — even this halloween ‘season,’ how many witch, angel, demon, cat, police officer, (or whatever other overused costume) have you seen on snap or insta? I can confidently say I’ve seen at least two of each of the ones I mentioned. And two things that I constantly consider are 1) why does everyone want to look the same? 2) why does everyone want to change who they are for halloween? And my answer to those questions: they don’t know who they really are. And it makes sense to look at it like that. To be a Christian is to know who you are IN CHRIST, so we might be certain of who we are -- but they lack that certainty.

So that is what will be our focus: our Identity in Christ. Knowing who we are called to be in Christ is so important and pivotal to our walk in this life. In Matthew 5:13, we read that our “lives are like salt among the people. But if you, like salt, become bland, how can your ‘saltiness’ be restored? Flavorless salt is good for nothing and will be thrown out and trampled on by others.” This is Jesus speaking for context, and He is telling us that we are meant to ‘season’ this dull earth with His light. If you forget who you are, you will neglect your purpose and that can be dangerous not only to you but to those who you are meant to help. When we fail to recognize the mission we have, we are at risk of denying others the blessing God has placed within us to give them. In an earlier blog that I wrote called Help is Not Far Behind, I talk about Destiny Helpers, and the impact they can have on our lives. We all have those who help us on our journey with Christ, but we must not forget that we too are capable of helping others.

Going off of that, in 1 Peter 2:9 we are told that we have been “set apart as God’s devoted ones,” and that He did this in order for us to “broadcast His glorious wonders throughout the world.” Once you truly recognize this mantle that has been placed on you and the gravity of the task associated with it -- and you ACCEPT it, you can’t let go of it. The knowledge of purpose is what makes visions and dreams into actions and plans. That is why it is so important for us to know who God says we are, because it is not just about us.

Last, but certainly not the least, we are God’s masterpieces. In Psalms we read that God made us in our mother’s wombs, He created us from dust and designed every part of our being. The bible tells us that we are “fearfully, and wonderfully made,” and since God is not a man who makes mistakes, then we cannot be mistakes. We have been made as we are on purpose and for purpose. This means that you and I, and your best friend, and her cousin, and his mom, and her pastor and his great grandmother were all made perfectly. As a society, human beings seek to be the best, they seek to be perfect -- with God we have already achieved that, so why are we not walking in it?

Halloween calls us to reject our true nature, it calls us to want to be anything BUT ourselves. Doesn’t that seem a little weird? On a day like this, let us reflect on who we were born to be, and why those versions of us are the ones we should walk in daily. Make a promise to yourself, walk in your true identity and cherish it, because there is ONLY ONE YOU.
