Power of the Tongue: A Flame of Fire (pt. 1)

Today we will talk about one of the greatest powers known to man: the power of the tongue. In this part of the blog we will discuss the destructive power of the tongue. Our anchor scripture comes from Proverbs 18:21, “death and life are in the control of the tongue. Those who indulge in it will eat its fruit.” A verse so commonly known, but constantly overlooked. The destructive tongue is any and every word that directly goes against the word of God. These are things such as lying, gossiping, using foul language, cursing others or yourself, or just saying very negative things in general. Something so small and hidden carries a great power.

The phrase “biting your tongue” is our teeth preventing us from saying something, usually to another person, because it would negatively affect the situation. God used your teeth and your lips as an extra protective barrier/fence to emphasize the importance of being cautious, so that we do not use the power of the tongue without care. But sometimes our barriers become weak and we let negative words escape from our mouths.

Your progress may be staggering because of your own words. Once you say negative things about yourself, you will start to believe those things. The enemy will use our own tongue to curse us. The enemy isn’t just after your mind, but he is after your heart as well. The devil can’t hear your thoughts, but he sure can hear your words. Luke 10:19 says, “And I have given you authority over all the power of the Enemy, and to walk among serpents and scorpions and to crush them.” The words you speak will authorize the devil or enact the will of God. Your words will either practice that authority and walk among serpents, or it will give that authority to the serpents to walk all over you. Never speak words that allow the enemy to think he’s winning.

James 3:6 says, “and the tongue is a fire!... It pollutes the entire body and sets fire to the course of human existence—and is set on fire by hell.” Something that came to mind while reading this verse was the result of fire. A fire not only destroys things but it produces thick, black smoke that pollutes the earth. If the tongue sets a fire within you and pollutes the entire body, it creates a certain darkness. That darkness harbors the ill intent of the devil. It carries sin and evil. How can one harbor darkness when they were called to be the light of the world?

Give your heart to God. Let him purify it. If you allow your heart to belong to yourself, you will say things that cater to yourself, which is not what God wants. If something is not for God or it does not abide by His will, it goes against it. Going against God and His word is not a position we should ever want to be in. Our anchor scripture says “those that indulge in it (the tongue) will eat its fruit”. You also consume your words. Taste them before you let them leave your mouth. When you pluck a fruit, you always wait ‘til it is ripe before you eat it. You don’t eat unripe fruit. Don’t “eat” your negative words. Let only positive words be your source of consumption. Amen.
