Regret and Guilt: A Burden You Don’t Have to Hold

Hey guyssss! Let’s start off with some definitions:

The definition of “guilt”, as given by Google, has two noun definitions that are applicable in this context:

  • (noun) “the fact of having committed a specified or implied offense or crime.”

  • (noun) “a feeling of having done wrong or failed in an obligation.”

The definition of “regret”, also provided by Google, has a noun and a verb definition:

  • (noun) “a feeling of sadness, repentance, or disappointment over something that has happened or been done.”

  • (verb) “feel sad, repentant, or disappointed over (something that has happened or been done, especially a loss or missed opportunity).”

We all know from our personal experiences in this life that guilt and regret aren’t great feelings to feel. They stem from our thoughts that a certain situation could have resulted in a differing outcome, and this applies to all contexts to many varying degrees. We may have had a role in that prior-mentioned outcome directly or indirectly. This could be in the sense of missing out on an opportunity that we could’ve done something about, or an overall bad situation taking place in general. These varying occurrences are what lead to our guilt or regret. We are led to feel convicted with guilt that then leads on to future feelings of regret that cause us to worry and be uneasy.

Believe me when I say that these feelings are natural for us humans. Things happen in life that cause us to feel the ways we do at times, but when all goes wrong, we should remember the Cross! Because of this Cross, we don’t have to carry these burdens and worries anymore; we are truly never alone in any situation! Jesus is the piece that connected us to the Father once He died on that Cross; He is our Mediator! As believers, we can go to the Father for anything that bothers us, and 1 Peter 5:7 couldn’t have said this any better:

7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

AMP (a very seasoned version, may I add!):

7 casting all your cares [all your anxieties, all your worries, and all your concerns, once and for all] on Him, for He cares about you [with deepest affection, and watches over you very carefully].

Our hope lies right in the Bible, with all of its scriptures of promises and truths. We know that He truly cares for us and wants to help us! All we have to do as believers is to actually open up to Him about whatever we are going through. He surely knows, but the fact that you communicate with Him through your prayer and worship is an expression of your trust and commitment to Him over your situation!

There is nothing we can do about the past, but we can commit our futures to Him! If we allow Him to be a lamp to our feet, we will walk according to His plan for us. Although this may be true, it doesn’t mean that things will be smooth-sailing: life as a believer isn’t an easy thing! There may be times where we experience the prior-discussed feelings of guilt and regret again, but one thing for sure is that God already knows what is going to happen. With this, we can rest assured with our trust in God all the more. This is all a part of the experience of life, and we just have to experience it to develop into the person that God has called us to be.

To close off, I want to leave you all with this encouraging scripture -- ‭‭Philippians‬ ‭3:12-14‬ ‭(NLT‬‬), as stated by Paul to the people:

12 “I don’t mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me. 13 No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.”

Let’s focus on the future, because all we can do is go forward and trust God for our future situations, and pray over the feelings that we hold over past situations. Thank you, and stay blessed!
