Spiritual Discernment

Spiritual discernment. What is it? Spiritual discernment is when God helps us to make wise decisions. It is the ability to understand and evaluate specific situations and take the best course of action  after taking everything into account. Distinguishing is also a part of this kind of discernment. To distinguish means to recognize as different, in other words, to separate; separate good from evil, truth from falsehood, the primary from the secondary, wisdom from foolishness, the necessary from the insignificant, and the permanent from the impermanent. Even more, the good from the better, and the better from the best. It is seeing things the way God sees them and acting accordingly. God is not a man that His thoughts are limited to the world’s realm. In the same way, when we possess spiritual discernment, it goes beyond what is perceived in the physical realm.

Spiritual discernment is very important to believers and just like most things, it is not handed to you like a present. It is something that is developed. In order to develop discernment there are a few things that we need to take into consideration. The first thing is prayer. Asking God is essential. If there is anything that we desire, giving it up to God in prayer is always a given. In Matthew 21:22, it says, “If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.” It also says in Matthew 7:7, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” Having consistent communication with God is important to truly knowing Him; and if spiritual discernment is thinking like Him and acting in accordance to His will, who better to spend quality time with than Him? He is the only one who can give you spiritual discernment. Prayer is communication with God. Communication goes both ways. After we are done speaking to God, it’s important that we stop and listen to what He has to say back. We want to be intentional about what God is trying to relay back to us, meaning we have to be open to any source that God tries to reach us through. Knowing what God wants for our life can be difficult when we look for the answer in other places than the source, the Bible. If we want to know God and the direction in which we should go, it’s essential to spend time in the Word. Another important aspect to developing our spiritual discernment is removing feelings of judgment. Discernment and judging others are not the same and discernment shouldn’t be used as an excuse to judge.

Now that we know how to develop spiritual discernment, we can talk about what we can achieve with it. Discernment acts as an instrument of healing, when exercised in grace. When exercised in love, discernment can be the surgical scalpel in spiritual surgery that makes healing possible. Discernment functions as a key to Christian freedom. Growth in discernment sets us free from bondage such as being suppressed by others, our own ignorant conscience, and an unbiblical way of life.

Discernment also serves as a catalyst to spiritual development. Proverbs 14:6 says, “The mocker seeks wisdom and finds none, but knowledge comes easily to the discerning.” A Christian with discernment goes to the heart of the matter. All things derive from God. When you have an increase in knowledge, you have a deeper recognition of the harmony of all God’s works and words.
