Surrendering to God

Oftentimes, the word surrender has a negative connotation to it. When we think “surrender” we often associate it with words such as “weak,” “incapable,” “dependent” or “loser.” It’s our human nature to stand at the top, able and capable, and not have to submit to the authority or help of others but what if I said surrendering doesn’t have to be bad? As humans we’re always ready to defend ourselves and we think we know best. We try to do everything by ourselves even when our way isn’t always best. That’s why the good in “surrender '' is something that we often overlook. There is someone who knows better than you. Someone whose ways are better. Someone who knows the best path for us to take even when it’s not a path we necessarily want to walk. This “someone” is God. The One who knows our beginning, middle, and end and knows us better than we know ourselves.

When God asks that we surrender to Him, He isn’t saying we’re weak, He is saying that what He has for us is in our best interests. This is shown in Jeremiah 29:11 where God speaks about the plans He has for His children. Plans to prosper and not harm them, plans to give them hope and a future. Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” When we submit to God, everything else in our lives align. The path that we once struggled to walk on, taking many turns and even often found ourselves back at square one has been redirected by God in a straight line. When we allow God to take control of our lives, it keeps the devil away from us just as it is said in James 4:7; submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. To surrender to God is to trust Him enough to be in control of our circumstances, our trials, even just everyday life occurrences, surrendering to something unusual to us. When we choose our own way, we are disregarding God. Surrender to God for everything He does is for us. He is for us and not against us. Remember, surrendering to God, makes you opposite to what most people think, a winner not a loser.
