I Have Commanded You, “Be Strong

The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak…

Today, I will be discussing temptation with you. Something that everyone goes through almost every day. You see, the devil is always at work, even while you are sleeping. The Bible says that the devil only comes to steal, kill and destroy. Once he knows that God has created you for a higher purpose, he will do everything in his evil power to make sure that it doesn’t come to pass. One of his main tactics is temptation. Temptation comes in many forms -- whether it be your friends, family, or your own personal desires and weaknesses. But by the grace of God, we also have protection that comes in many forms (the Bible, prayer, worship/praise, God’s power, the Holy Spirit, Jesus, etc.) But the most important thing God has given us is the whole armor of God.

In Ephesians 6:10-11 (NIV), the bible says “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. But put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.

I find it interesting how God said to be strong, but then he also commands us to put on the full armor of God. “Be strong” means you are strong. There is no need to pretend to be strong, because you are strong. But God still said to put on the whole armor of God. Meaning that, you can be the strongest person in your army but still have a weakness. You can be the holiest person in your friend group but still battle with unholy desires and thoughts. Every weakness that you have, the devil will use to destroy everything that God has destined for your life. Judas’ weakness was greed/an unholy desire for money. He was one of Jesus’ honorable twelve disciples, but because the devil used another person to tempt him with money, AND because he was in a state of weakness, he traded in our Savior for money that wouldn’t last as long as the grace that Jesus had bestowed upon him. If he had the armor of God, the full armor of God, he wouldn’t be known as a betrayer.

Build your spiritual muscles. Matthew 4:1-11 talks about Jesus being tempted three times by the devil. Verse 1 says “Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.”

Jesus was led by the Spirit. He followed him and did everything he was told to do. Because of this, Jesus was able to overcome the devil and become stronger. The Holy Spirit is in you for a reason. It is there to strengthen you so that you don’t give in to your flesh and it's there to help you fight spiritual battles/warfare. You cannot enter a battle specifically made for spirits with just your flesh. Even though Jesus was and is God, he didn’t overcome Satan as God. He overcame Satan as a man filled with the Holy Spirit. Not only was he a man filled with the Spirit, but he carried the sword of the Spirit in his mouth, mind and heart.

I advise you, put on the full armor of God. Have faith. The shield of faith protects the rest of your armor. A shield is used as protection against blows. If your shield isn’t big enough to cover most of your body, there will be an opening where the enemy will attack and strike you down. Don't be afraid to go to God, because even Jesus went through an attack from the devil. Utilize everything that God has given you, including His spirit, and His word. You need to know the Holy Spirit and the Word in order to use them. I want you to go down on your knees and pray as much as you can. I want you to speak directly to the Holy Spirit. Develop a relationship with Him. Don’t focus on temptation, focus on building your spiritual muscles with the Holy Spirit. If your spirit is strong and powerful, nothing will ever shake you down. Be blessed. Amen.
