The Greatest Gift from God: The Birth of Jesus Christ

We live in a world where the purpose of Christmas is to give gifts and receive gifts in return. The true meaning of Christmas has been changed by the world to the point where some Christians even believe in the wrong reason why we celebrate Christmas. When you look up the word Christmas, Christmas is described as “an annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ,” other definitions say a Christian holiday. Even with a simple and clear definition of what Christmas is about, the world pushes away the fact that Christmas is about the birth of Jesus. Rather than focusing on the birth of a baby who will walk on water, raise people from the dead, heal the blind, turn water into wine, the world focuses on a fictional character with white hair and a white beard, a big stomach, and wears a big red suit. I remember going to a store and I saw a group of kids walking with their parents talking about how excited they were for Christmas, but the thing that caught my attention was when of the kids said “ I wish for Santa get rid of Covid-19 as my present,” and the mother replied, “me too sweetheart, me too.” When I heard the kid say they wished for Santa Claus, a made-up person to get rid of something that only God has control over, it made me feel sad for the kid. Why did I feel sad for that kid? I felt sad because the kid is asking for a gift that only God himself can give.

But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).

Matthew 1:20‭-‬23 NIV

As Christians, we must never turn away or fall into the ideas on which man has set Christmas on but remember that Christmas is about the birth of The Savior Jesus Christ. Don’t get me wrong, getting gifts are nice and all but we must never forget to not take for granted the greatest gift of all that was given by God, the birth of Jesus Christ. We receive gifts from those we love and we cherish those gifts, and this should be the same for us concerning God’s gift to us. God loved us so much that He gave His only one and only Son to die and pay for our sins. We must cherish the gift God has given to us and never take for granted the sacrifice Jesus made to save us. We must give thanks to God for giving us His Son not only on Christmas but every day, we must never forget the true meaning and purpose of Christmas, and most of all we must never forget the greatest gift we have received from God, the birth of Jesus Christ.

Sovereign God we thank you for all you have done and all you continue to do. Father, we thank you for the Christmas season and all the joy within this season. Father, we can never thank you more than enough for the greatest gift you have given us, the birth of Jesus Christ, we thank you for keeping us and providing for us. Father, we pray that this coming year will be filled with joy and happiness, and that you will continue to dwell within us. We give you praise and adoration, in Jesus' name we pray, amen.
