The Holy Spirit

We all know that God has three forms. He is three persons, who are all equally important and vital to Christianity. We have God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. As Christians, we are acquainted with and tend to comprehend the Father and the Son more than the Holy Spirit. To gain a better understanding of God as a whole, and to improve our relationship with Him, we need to know who the Holy Spirit is and recognize His importance in our walk with Christ, as well as who the Holy Spirit is to us.

First and foremost...who is the Holy Spirit? As stated earlier before, the Holy Spirit is the third form of God in the Holy Trinity. The Spirit is not the Father or the Son but is God. We say “who” is the Holy Spirit instead of “what” is the Holy Spirit because the Spirit is referred to as a person. The Spirit is a “He” not an “it.” The Holy Spirit is given to all who accept that Jesus is their Lord and Saviour and believe Jesus died on the cross and rose again three days later for our sins.

John 14:16-17 - And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you know Him, for He lives with you and will be in you.

Ephesians 1:13 - And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit.

Acts 2:38 - Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

As we know, the Holy Spirit has been given to us by God but He wasn’t given to us just to be there and dwell in us, He was given to us for a purpose. The purpose of the Holy Spirit in our lives is to aid us in our Christian walk by being our Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Governor, Teacher, and Guide. The Holy Spirit is on a mission to help us get closer to God and reveal His nature in our lives, He helps us in our weakness and intercedes in prayer within us when we don’t know what to do or say. He governs us in order to conform us into people of God or into godly children. He teaches and guides us in the truth (for He is the Spirit of Truth), in the way we should live our lives in order to fulfill our god-given purpose.

Romans 8:26-27 - In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God

John 14:16-17 - And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.

Ezekiel 36:27 - And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.

John 16:13- But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come

Whenever you feel yourself struggling or stumbling in the wrong direction, know that there is a “God in you” who is always there, ready to pick you up and walk with you as He advises and leads you down the difficult but most rewarding path a person could walk. We can never be abandoned by God if He literally dwells within us. You might not always feel Him, but the Spirit is evidence that He remains with you in your presence. Remember this and walk with confidence as a child of God.
