The Importance of Your Surroundings

Updated: Apr 18, 2023

Your surroundings are CRUCIAL. Have you guys every heard of Proverbs 27:17? Well, for our readers who are a little behind on their memory verses; that scripture says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” How I see it, is that if you surround yourself with like minded people, they will be able to help you advance in whatever it is you all collectively care about. Let’s use a small example: when sharpening a knife, you ideally would use a steel rod because it has the strength to withstand the type of steel that is the knife. You wouldn’t think to use wood, or cotton because you don’t expect them to be able to handle the steel. In this same manner, if we surround ourselves with people who aren’t on the same path as us, or who don’t value the same things we do, we cannot expect them to be able to give us what we need to be strengthened on our spiritual journey; and we certainly cannot expect that they will be strong enough to handle all that we may be throwing their way — it’s just not fair.

The walk that every Christian embarks on when they accept Christ is not an easy one. The road is long, windy, and filled with obstacles at literally every turn. Not to scare you guys, but being a Christian means there is always someone working to see you fall; the enemy wants to make sure you don’t get the chance to do the things for which God placed you on this Earth. For such reasons, man was not designed to go on this walk alone — even God has his companions (the Trinity). As a Christian, having friends who are also Christians makes life a lot easier. Now, just to be clear, that doesn’t mean no unbelieving friends, it just means you should value your Christian friends and aim to have a couple close ones. Personally, I have a mix of believing and non believing best friends, and I love them all dearly. My “church” friends have helped me on my faith walk without even knowing it. They motivate me daily to do simple things like read my bible, pray, or even just spend time with God. Had it not been for some of them, I’m not sure I’d be as strong in my faith as I am today. Our friendship and corporate fellowship is what led to the creation of Flow Temple Ministries, and could you imagine how unfortunate it would’ve been if Flow Temple didn’t come to be? — I don’t want to.

Don’t allow yourself to be held back by people who aren’t walking in the direction that you are, even if that means going solo… God will ALWAYS have your back.
