What it Means to be a Christian

Updated: Feb 11, 2023

What does it mean to be a Christian? Being a Christian means 2 things mainly: to Live like Jesus and to Live for God. You might be thinking to yourself, is there even a difference?, and the truth is yes, of course there is a difference. So, allow me to tell you.

Living like Jesus means that we are His disciples, we are followers and doers of Jesus. The 12 Disciples legit followed Jesus wherever He went, and because we are not able to literally follow Jesus, we live out His teachings and do as He told us to do. What exactly were we told to do? We were told in Matthew 28:19 (NIV) to “go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” Right here, we are told that as disciples of Jesus we are to be spreaders of the Gospel, and we are to be teachers. As teachers and doers, how do we get by in a world where we are not welcome? We use the gifts and power that our teacher and leader has left for us. Matthew 10:1 tells us that Jesus has given us authority and power, an authority and a power that is valid only in the name of Jesus, not by any other name. John 14:26 tells us that we have an advocate, the Holy Spirit. This Spirit empowers us and gives us confidence so that our hearts and minds can be at peace as we walk in boldness to do God’s work. So, as we are empowered by the Holy Spirit, spread the Word of God, and walk in Jesus’s footsteps, we set an example for others. We live our lives being different from others because we are God’s “chosen people, a royal priesthood” (1 Peter 2:9). We have been called and must fulfill our purpose, which is different from those who do not not know Jesus. In order to be seen and in order to make an impact, we must be noticed; we must shine as disciples of Christ.

Alright, so how does being a Christian mean living for God? As Christians, we live like Jesus did and as we know, Jesus lived to “do the will of him who sent [him] and finish his work” (John 4: 34 NIV). This shows that we are living to serve God and accomplish His will, so we are not living for ourselves, but for God. Additionally, Genesis 1:27 and Colossians 1:16 serve as proof that as creations, we were created by a Creator. The Creator is greater than we are, and the Creator created us for a purpose- His purpose. Knowing this, we are to be in tune with God and align ourselves with His will. Whether we do so through prayer or by reading the Bible, we must make sure that we know what God desires of us and what He wants us to do. Another key part in living for God is sacrifice. Our sacrifice to God shows Him that He means more to us than what we are giving away. It shows that we are willing to give up something of ours in order to make room for something of His, and that is what we should be doing as people who are living according to God’s will and not our own. Luke 9:23 reads “If anyone wishes to follow Me, he must deny himself…” We might have to sacrifice our desires or our time, but that is all part of living for God and living like Jesus. So, if I were to sum up what it means to be a Christian, I would say that it means to be a living vessel. A vessel is a container that holds something. As living vessels, we are to carry out the work of God. We are to empty ourselves so that God’s will can fill us up instead. We are to sacrifice our desires so that the things of God can fill that space. It is when we allow God to fill us up that we can effectively do the work of God, just as Jesus did.
