What Makes A Difference In A Friendship

1 Corinthians 10:23 - All things are lawful [that is, morally legitimate, permissible], but not all things are beneficial or advantageous. All things are lawful, but not all things are constructive [to character] and edifying [to spiritual life].

That’s how friendships are. It’s allowed, or legal, to have friends but not all friends build you up, not all friends are helpful, not all friends instruct or improve. Now I’m not saying it’s bad to have friends, the Bible itself talks about how it is better to have one person (or more) by your side in Ecclesiastes 4:9-12. What I mean is that the type of friends you surround yourself with may not necessarily be bad or dangerous but they can be a negative influence and nuisance to your development and nature. There are millions of different kinds of friends in this world but there is truly only one type that is better than the rest: the God-given friend. Sometimes, it can be hard to know who exactly is a God-given friend and who isn’t, this is why it is important to become familiar with the character of a God-given friend in order to weed out the non-beneficial, corrupt friends in your life.

1 Corinthians 15: 33 - Do not be deceived: “Bad company corrupts good morals.”

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 - Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

A God-given friend is a friend that brings the best out of you. A friend that will accompany you on your walk and drive you closer to God. They’re a friend that is not afraid to be honest with you (no matter how much it may hurt) and stay by your side no matter how deep you fall. They don’t hinder your progress, instead they enhance you, making you stronger and more energized put in a fight. This type of friend is given to you for an ordained purpose from God Himself (hence why they are called God-given.) They are brought into your life, not only to benefit you but to benefit themselves through you. A friendship is not supposed to be one-sided, both ends of the friendship should profit and that should happen naturally. When you have a good friend, you just want to instinctively aid them the same way they aid you. Through this exchange, a God-given nature is created in you as well.

Proverbs 27:17 - As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.

I Thessalonians 5:11 - Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.

Proverbs 27:9 - Oil and perfume make the heart glad; So does the sweetness of a friend’s counsel that comes from the heart.

Hebrews 10:24-25 - And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

Not everything a God-given friend says or does, you will like. But the thing is, they’re are not here to make us comfortable and get cozy in our sin, they are here to bring us out of that comfort zone in order for us to flourish. Whether we like it or not, it is for the best, and feeling uncomfortable is a necessity as a Christian. We have to constantly grow and we can’t grow by staying complacent in one place that’s why we need that little extra push by that trusted person God has so thoughtfully placed in our lives. By being influenced by that God-given friend, you become more and more eligible to be a God-given friend for someone else too. Let’s all try to surround ourselves with God-given friends rather than the mediocracy of the world.
